It was aimed at providing a broad overview of the substantive law, judicial skills and social context of law relevant to the cases that come before the Family Court Branch.

This Family Court Branch Education Seminar was an additional seminar for newly appointed Family Court Branch judges that immediately preceded the Court’s spring Education Seminar. It was aimed at providing a broad overview of the substantive law, judicial skills and social context of law relevant to the cases that come before the Family Court Branch.

Objectives

The objectives of this seminar were to provide a broad overview of the substantive law, judicial skills and social context of law targeted to newly appointed judges to the Family Court Branch.

Summary

The broad range of sessions in this seminar dealt with: an overview of child protection law; key differences with the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017; child protection best practices; apprehension and temporary care and custody hearings; summary judgment motions; settlement conferences in child protection cases; special considerations with Indigenous children; access orders and openness in the child protection context; scientific evidence in child protection and family cases; front-end family justice services; the Family Law Rules; self-represented litigants in family law; family law property; high conflict family cases; case, settlement, trial scheduling and trial management conferences; urgent motions; custody and access from Bill C-78; alternative dispute resolution in the child protection context; and judicial resources of family and child protection cases.
