This seminar focused on practical updates on the Court’s core substantive law areas of immigration, administrative law, and intellectual property, federal corrections and human rights, and judicial decision-making.

Objectives

The objectives of the seminar were for participants to review case law developments in the Court’s core substantive law areas, to enhance their understanding of human rights and correctional facilities and to explore unconscious bias in judicial decision-making.

Summary

The program content was presented through a mix of presentations and interactive question and answer sessions, with faculty consisting of senior judges of the Court, experienced counsel, government representatives, and multi-disciplinary academics.  Sessions included significant developments in intellectual property with an emphasis on PM(NOC) regulation updates and trademark issues; human rights issues arising in correctional facilities; judicial review and artificial intelligence; a review of the test for leave in immigration applications for judicial review; and decision-making and strategies to base decisions on critical thought processes that promote reasoned decisions.
