Objectives

The objectives of this seminar were to provide judges assigned criminal jury cases the fundamental skills necessary to craft effective jury instructions.

Summary

Led by senior judges with expertise in criminal law jury trials, this workshop-style seminar combined short lectures, panel discussions and small-group exercises covering the following topics: selecting the jury and preliminary instructions, trial management powers after Jordan, dealing with the under-represented accused in a jury trial, mid-trial instructions, essential components of final instructions, pre-charge conferences, form of final instructions and the use of aids, hearing objections to the charge, discharging a juror during deliberations, and responding to jury questions.
