Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba - Lunch and Learn Sessions 2019-2020

The Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba provides a number of informal Lunch and Learn programs each year. All judges and masters of the court and judges of the Court of Appeal have the opportunity to attend these programs. The Court also holds Lunch and Learn sessions on topics of particular interest to the judges of either the Family Division or the General Division, and directed to those members of the Court.

Overview

The Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba provides a number of informal Lunch and Learn programs each year.  All judges and masters of the court and judges of the Court of Appeal have the opportunity to attend these programs.  The Court also holds Lunch and Learn sessions on topics of particular interest to the judges of either the Family Division or the General Division, and directed to those members of the Court.

Objectives

The objective of these sessions is to provide judges with information about various issues, in an environment for open discussion, to improve their understanding and knowledge of the law.

Summary

Lunch and Learn sessions were held respecting sections 276 and 278.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada; the Sacred Eagle Feather Oath and a subsequent tutorial on Sacred Eagle Feather events in the Court; the Law Society of Manitoba C.P.L.E.D. (Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education) program; Chapters C, D, E and F of The Family Modernization Act (with emphasis on the amendments to The Arbitration Act and The Family Maintenance Act); Methamphetamine: Facts and Fallacies; R. v. Barton and the use of appropriate and respectful language; the Role of Treaties in the Development of Canada; an Overview of Bill C-92, An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis Children, Youth and Families; and The Family Violence, Jurisdictional, Inter-jurisdictional and certain other provisions in the Bill C-78 Divorce Act amendments.
