Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta: Bi-Annual Education Seminar - Hiver 2018

Overview

The 2018 seminar addressed a range of topical issues in criminal, civil and family law, in addition to the social context of law, of particular interest and relevance to the region.

Objectives

The objectives of this program were to provide participants with the substantive knowledge and skills on: injunctions; corporate and oppressive conduct remedies; estate litigation matters; Indigenous history in southern Alberta; and the legal implications flowing from the legalization of cannabis.

Summary

This seminar used innovative and experiential teaching methods to address core issues that are dealt before the Court. Lectures and panel discussions from senior judges, experienced practitioners, legal academics, medical experts, and members of Indigenous communities were supplemented with more interactive elements, such as table discussions and instant responses to fact scenarios. These sessions dealt with: the framework and recent innovations in the law of injunctions; the law on corporate and oppressive conduct remedies; common issues arising before the court in estates matters; the history of Indigenous peoples in Treaty 7 territory; the road to the legalization of cannabis in Canada and the new regulatory structure governing cannabis; the health effects of cannabis, including medicinal use; the and implications of cannabis legalization on workplace law, condo law, landlord tenant law, and criminal law. The seminar equally included a session on fostering a Respectful Workplace, in which an expert conducted an instruction session on workplace power imbalance, harassment, discrimination, micro-aggression and bullying behaviours, and provided instruction on effective and appropriate workplace communication.
