This seminar, a national forum for judges from across Canada who hear class action proceedings, was an update on current issues in class action law with a focus on multi-jurisdictional class actions.

Objectives

The central theme of the course was co-ordination of regional, national, and global class actions and how to manage and adjudicate a multiplicity of proceedings in class actions.


Summary

Led by experienced judges and academics, participants discussed the underlying purposes of class actions and practical approaches to multi-jurisdictional actions. Sessions included: class actions and access to justice, case managing multi-jurisdictional class actions, avoiding multiplicity of proceedings, carriage motions and stays, and approval and administration of settlements in multi-jurisdictional class actions.
