Training that never stops

For the sake of transparency, since 2018, the Council annually publishes a list of courses and seminars available during the previous fiscal year. The following is a list of courses, seminars and other learning activities attended by federally appointed judges to continue their learning and enhance their knowledge.

    Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador Education Seminar

    Led by experienced judges and legal academics, this program used a combination of lectures, discussion, and interactive elements. Sessions included a "primer" on hearsay including a review of the traditional exceptions and the “principled approach” for admissibility; an interactive discussion on issues arising in domestic contracts; a session on estate litigation including how estate law intersects with family law; and practical sessions designed to increase judicial skills in managing jury trials and conducting bail review hearings. The program also included a presentation on the intersection of coercive control and human trafficking, in which participants heard from a survivor, a representative of law enforcement and academic faculty.

    Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador Education Seminar - Fall 2022

    This seminar provided training on a variety of substantive law, social context and judicial skills related topics. The sessions included an examination of recent and significant cases in sexual assault law, interviewing children, guardianship of the person, the jury selection process and managing difficult litigants.

    Teaching Indigenous Law 2022

    Including special guests from the University of Victoria Indigenous Law program, an event was held to celebrate the installation of 6 pieces of Indigenous artwork, including land acknowledgements, in the Whitehorse Courthouse atrium in an event called Towards Reconciliation.

    Writing Reasons in Sexual Assault Cases 2022

    An inquiry into the history of sexual assault cases in the Canadian criminal justice system points to a system wrought with biases, stereotypes and prejudices. Only in the last few decades did the law begin to swiftly progress. Because of this progression, courts across Canada have identified many stereotypes that live in the minds of decision-makers, including judges and juries, which are now prohibited from relying on when making decisions.

  • September 6 2022 - September 9 2022

    Northern Courts Education Seminar 2022

    This joint seminar of the Supreme Court of Yukon, the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories and the Nunavut Court of Justice covered a variety of topics relevant to the work of the courts: hearing children’s evidence, case management in criminal law, the impact of intimate partner violence on children, settlement hearings, and strategies for furthering the goals of reconciliation.

    Judgment Writing 2022

    This seminar is designed to assist judges in improving their judgment-writing skills. The program includes lectures, discussions, and workshops that stress the nature of good prose, point-first writing and the special requirements and special challenges of judicial writing. Since the art of writing is a skill that, like all skills, can be improved only through practice, much of the instruction will centre on written exercises and judgments.
