For the sake of transparency, since 2018, the Council annually publishes a list of courses and seminars available during the previous fiscal year. The following is a list of courses, seminars and other learning activities attended by federally appointed judges to continue their learning and enhance their knowledge.

    Education Seminar

    This program brought together judges of the Provincial Court of New Brunswick, the Court of Queen’s Bench of New Brunswick and the Court of Appeal of New Brunswick. It focused on criminal law with an emphasis on the social context of sexual assault trials, general evidentiary issues in criminal trials, trial management skills, sentencing and Gladue reports, joint submissions on sentencing, and Supreme Court of Canada updates.

    International Conference

    The ISRCL is an international non-governmental association of judges, legislators, lawyers, academics, government officials, police and corrections professionals dedicated to improving the administration of criminal justice in their own jurisdiction and internationally. The conference theme for 2017 was Criminal Justice in the 21st Century. It was open to participants from around the world involved in criminal law cases. This conference gave participants a look at the latest developments, strategies, and techniques involved in the many reforms currently being implemented in criminal law to meet society’s changing needs.

    Special Advocates and Amici Curiae Educational Seminar

    This seminar brought together judges, special advocates, amici curiae and government lawyers experienced in national security issues. Developed in collaboration with the courts and the key stakeholders in these judicial proceedings, this program was intended for judges who preside over national security matters and focused on the history and context of special advocates and amici curiae in these matters.

    The Judicial Response to Terrorism: Case and Courtroom Management

    Common issues in criminal law become complex in terrorism cases because of the unique investigative processes, coupled with the division of responsibility for national security proceedings and criminal prosecutions. The Federal Court, in collaboration with provincial superior courts, created a specialized program, designed to assist federally appointed judges in handling these types of cases and to understand the unique challenges arising from global and national security threats.

    This seminar was intended for judges who hear terrorism cases. This program was developed to ensure judges have the necessary tools to address the unique challenges created by global and national security threats.
