Training that never stops

For the sake of transparency, since 2018, the Council annually publishes a list of courses and seminars available during the previous fiscal year. The following is a list of courses, seminars and other learning activities attended by federally appointed judges to continue their learning and enhance their knowledge.

    Education Seminar

    This program brought together judges of the Provincial Court of New Brunswick, the Court of Queen’s Bench of New Brunswick and the Court of Appeal of New Brunswick. It focused on criminal law with an emphasis on the social context of sexual assault trials, general evidentiary issues in criminal trials, trial management skills, sentencing and Gladue reports, joint submissions on sentencing, and Supreme Court of Canada updates.

  • September 27 2017 - September 29 2017

    Joint Education Seminar

    This seminar focused on issues relevant to appellate judging in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, including the social context of the Métis population and legal issues concerning Métis title to land, the rising phenomena of street and prison gangs in Western Canada, cross-border jurisdictional issues and updates on cases from the Supreme Court of Canada.

  • November 14 2017 - May 8 2024

    New Judges’ Program

    This seminar was intended for the new judges appointed to the Court over the previous year and was designed to supplement the national training provided in the Seminar for Recently Appointed Judges. This program focused on providing participants with specific information on substantive, procedural and administrative issues applicable to trial judges in British Columbia.
