For the sake of transparency, since 2018, the Council annually publishes a list of courses and seminars available during the previous fiscal year. The following is a list of courses, seminars and other learning activities attended by federally appointed judges to continue their learning and enhance their knowledge.

    Joint Education Seminar

    This seminar focused on issues relevant to appellate judging in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, including the social context of the Métis population and legal issues concerning Métis title to land, the rising phenomena of street and prison gangs in Western Canada, cross-border jurisdictional issues and updates on cases from the Supreme Court of Canada.

  • October 20 2017 - April 30 2024

    Special Advocates and Amici Curiae Educational Seminar

    This seminar brought together judges, special advocates, amici curiae and government lawyers experienced in national security issues. Developed in collaboration with the courts and the key stakeholders in these judicial proceedings, this program was intended for judges who preside over national security matters and focused on the history and context of special advocates and amici curiae in these matters.

  • February 15 2018 - February 16 2018

    The Judicial Response to Terrorism: Case and Courtroom Management

    This seminar was intended for judges who hear terrorism cases. It explored the judicial response to the unique challenges of national security and criminal proceedings in the complex world of global terrorism threats in Canada. This program was developed to ensure judges have the necessary tools to address the unique challenges created by global and national security threats.

  • April 1 2019 - March 31 2020

    Law at Lunch

    The British Columbia Court of Appeal offered a series of Law at Lunch educational sessions from April 2019 to March 2020. Each session covered a different topic and a subject matter expert was invited to speak and provide further insight on recent legal issues.
