The Canadian Judicial Council notes with sadness the passing of the Honourable Claude Bisson

Ottawa, March 22, 2024- Members of the Canadian Judicial Council were saddened to hear of the passing of their former colleague, the Honourable Claude Bisson, who was a valued member of the Council from 1988 until his retirement as Chief Justice of Quebec in 1994.   During his six years on the Council, Chief Justice Bisson made numerous important contributions and was deeply involved in the work of several committees including the Executive Committee, the Judicial Conduct Committee, and the Judicial Education Committee.  His work on the Administration of Justice Committee was particularly meaningful, providing him with the opportunity to champion calls for reform, including in the area of court unification, as an important means of ensuring timely access to justice for Canadians.

“Chief Justice Bisson worked tirelessly to encourage broad reforms to court structures in an effort to improve the administration of justice.  For this and for all of this contributions, Council members are truly proud and grateful to Chief Justice Bisson”, noted Chief Justice Richard Wagner, Chairperson of the Canadian Judicial Council.

On behalf of all its members, Council extends its sympathy to the family and friends of Chief justice Bisson.
