Overview

This seminar involved a range of topics related to substantive law, courtroom and trial management, and the ethics and role of the judiciary.

Objectives

The objectives of this course were to improve the participants’ substantive knowledge and skills with regard to: mental state and intent-based defences in criminal trials; risk assessments on dangerous and long-term offender applications; cyber-security; recognizing diversity; parental support for adult children; custody cases with reluctant children; and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

Summary

Led by senior judges, experienced practitioners, legal academics, psychiatric, psychological and scientific experts, and presented through a combination of presentations and interactive discussions, the program addressed: mental state and intent-based defences in criminal trials; assessing evidence of risk assessments on dangerous and long-term offender applications; cyber-security; recognizing diverse communities in the courtroom; determining applications for support for adult children; understanding the dynamics of, and options of, dealing with custody cases involving reluctant children; and implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
