Summary

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) called upon for the legal profession to ensure its members receive appropriate cultural competency training, to better understand the history and legacy of residential schools, and to learn more about the rights of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous law.

The event aimed to give lawyers and judges a unique opportunity to increase knowledge and awareness about the challenges faced by Indigenous people within the justice system. Lawyers and Judges in the Northwest Territories heard from practitioners, academics, justice system participants, community leaders and service providers about restorative justice and reconciliation. The program is intended to highlight Indigenous voices and to encourage participants to think about what we can do differently and better understand the challenges faced by people involved in the justice system.
