This seminar addressed the challenges of both managing and maintaining control in large criminal jury cases. This program was intended for judges with a strong criminal law background.

Objective

The objective of the program was to improve the judges’ ability to manage long and complex criminal jury trials.

Summary

The Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in R v Jordan has created the need for a seminar focused on tools and techniques for improving efficiency and reducing delay in complex criminal jury trials. The format allowed for applied activities, small-group discussions, and experiential learning.

The program focussed on the following topics: increasing efficiency and reducing delay through best practices; and exploring changes that would enable judges to better manage criminal jury trials, including changes to court rules, the Criminal Code, appellate court endorsement of trial management measures, and the specialization of judges.
