Lunch and Learn Programs

Overview

The Queen’s Bench of Manitoba provides several informal Lunch and Learn programs, open to all judges of the court.

Objectives

The objective of these sessions is to provide judges with an environment for open discussion to improve their understanding and knowledge of the law.

Summary

Presentations included: New Court of Queen’s Bench Criminal Rules enacted to improve trial efficiency; “Child protection trials” which reviewed the substantive provisions of The Child and Family Services Act (Manitoba) and best practices for governing the conduct of a child protection trial; “A Day in the Life of a Defence Lawyer,” presenting the challenges faced by defence lawyers in the conduct of a typical criminal case; services offered by the Legal Help Centre and the Family Justice Resource Centre to inform judges about available resources to assist self-represented litigants referred to these centres; common issues of concern to the Trial Division, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada relating to the administration of justice; a review of the major changes to the rules to achieve timely and affordable access to justice and the principle of proportionality; and an Overview of the Implications of The Hague Convention on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters.
