Overview

This annual program is designed to support judges in improving their judgment-writing skills. Newly appointed judges usually register for the course within two years of their appointment.

Objectives

The CIAJ Judgment Writing Seminar is a bilingual seminar for judges who wish to improve their understanding of the principles of effective judgment writing and their ability to put these into practice.

Summary

The program offered basic and advanced sessions for both English and French-speaking judges. It included lectures on the approach to effective judgment writing, including the special requirements and relevant issues and the use of gender-neutral language. The training included plenary sessions, small-group workshops and substantial time devoted to drafting a judgment in a simulated case, after which participants received expert feedback from a writing instructor and experienced judge.

The program is co-chaired by a common law judge and a civil law judge.
