Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba Education Seminar - Spring 2018

Overview

The first day of this two-day program focused on self-represented litigants in the Family and General Divisions of the Court. On the second day the Court began an examination of issues related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Final Report and its Calls to Action.

Objectives

The objectives of the first day of this seminar were to provide practical tools to assist participants with courtroom management of cases involving self-represented litigants. The objective of the second day was to enhance participants’ understanding of the history and social context of Indigenous peoples in Manitoba.

Summary

A multi-disciplinary faculty provided practical advice, explored the underlying factors driving the increase in self-represented litigants, and discussed courtroom management and applicable ethical and legal rules in cases involving self-represented litigants. Participants learned about the history of residential schools, the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its Calls to Action, including in the context the role of the judiciary and the justice system. Participants gained an enhanced understanding of the history and social context of Indigenous peoples in Canada and in Manitoba through the interactive KAIROS Canada « Blanket Exercise » led by local Elders and educators.
