Summary

Present-day laws and rights must be understood and interpreted in the context of past events - as the Supreme Court of Canada has often said, context matters.  The conference looked at how Manitoba's history with The Hudson's Bay Company, the Royal Proclamation of 1763, the treaties with our Indigenous peoples, the granting of reserved land for other specific groups of immigrant settlers, and the settlement of the Metis claims at the time of the formation of the Province of Manitoba in 1870 have all contributed to the development of the law in Manitoba, and will continue to inform the development and interpretation of the law in the future.
