Overview

This program focused on significant criminal and family developments and social context topics such as domestic violence, gender diversity, cultural assessments and practical skills such as managing self-represented litigants with mental health issues.

Objectives

The objectives of this program were threefold: to enhance understanding of social context; to provide a better understanding of the impact of the legalization of cannabis on employees and families; and to provide practical skills to support management of self-represented litigants in the courtroom, particularly those with mental health issues.

Summary

With a combination of presentations, panel discussions and exercises led by senior judges, multi-disciplinary academics and representatives from the local gender diverse community, the seminar explored the following topics: domestic violence, gender diversity and cultural assessments; best practices for working with self-represented litigants in the courtroom, and an understanding of the science of impairment, as well as the wide-ranging impacts of the legalization of cannabis.
