This program focused on significant criminal and family law developments, the development of written and oral judgments skills, the social context of Indigenous treaties in Atlantic Canada and mental health issues in the courtroom.

Overview

This program focused on significant criminal and family law developments, the development of written and oral judgments skills, the social context of Indigenous treaties in Atlantic Canada and mental health issues in the courtroom.

Objectives

The objectives of this program were threefold: to enhance written and oral judgments skills along with providing an update on criminal and family law developments; to provide a better understanding of the history and social context of Indigenous treaties in Atlantic Canada; and to explore and develop approaches to mental health issues in the courtroom.

Summary

With a combination of presentations, panel discussions and exercises led by senior judges, multi-disciplinary academics and representatives from the local Mi’kmaq community, the seminar explored the following topics: the law, best practices and social context related to shared parenting arrangements, including children’s perspectives; best practices for writing decisions and delivering oral judgments; approaches to mental health issues in the courtroom; and the history and social context of Indigenous treaties in Atlantic Canada.
