Training that never stops

For the sake of transparency, since 2018, the Council annually publishes a list of courses and seminars available during the previous fiscal year. The following is a list of courses, seminars and other learning activities attended by federally appointed judges to continue their learning and enhance their knowledge.

    Annual Conference

    The AFCC conference provided a multi-disciplinary setting in which judges, lawyers, mediators, researchers and mental health professionals shared insights into the resolution of family conflicts. A wide range of family law-related topics were discussed including parenting time, child support, and parenting during separation and divorce. Also discussed were legislative and policy initiatives, recent and developing research findings, professional practices and models, and most important, methods of resolving conflicts between family members.

    Oral Judgments Seminar 2017

    This seminar focused on delivering oral judgments. Developed in collaboration with senior judges and pedagogical and communications experts, this program helped members of the Court to learn and practice how to better structure their judgments, organize the evidence and law before and during a hearing, and communicate effectively.

  • October 20 2018 - October 26 2018

    Seminar for Newly Appointed Federal Judges 2018

    The CJC mandates that all new federally appointed judges attend this pair of seminars shortly after their appointment. They amount to nearly two full weeks of training for new judges – one held in the spring, the other in the fall – and are organized jointly by the National Judicial Institute and the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice.

    Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador Education Seminar 2018 (November)

    Sexual assault trials require a delicate balancing of competing rights in an evolving social context. They raise difficult questions about the use of appropriate inferences vs. inappropriate myths and stereotypes, consent and mistaken belief in consent, third party records, prior sexual experience evidence and sufficiency of reasons. With the assistance of expert faculty, this two-day program explored these difficult questions and challenges and provided participants with training about substantive and procedural law in sexual assault trials within both the confines of the law and an enriched understanding of social context.
