Training that never stops

For the sake of transparency, since 2018, the Council annually publishes a list of courses and seminars available during the previous fiscal year. The following is a list of courses, seminars and other learning activities attended by federally appointed judges to continue their learning and enhance their knowledge.

    Writing Reasons in Sexual Assault Cases 2022

    An inquiry into the history of sexual assault cases in the Canadian criminal justice system points to a system wrought with biases, stereotypes and prejudices. Only in the last few decades did the law begin to swiftly progress. Because of this progression, courts across Canada have identified many stereotypes that live in the minds of decision-makers, including judges and juries, which are now prohibited from relying on when making decisions.

    Criminal Jury Trials Seminar 2022

    Criminal jury trials pose unique procedural, evidentiary, and substantive law challenges. This seminar focused on criminal jury practice and law, from pre-trial conferencing to taking of the verdict, as well as a variety of evidentiary and substantive law issues trial judges will likely encounter in these cases.

  • June 27 2022 - June 30 2022

    Judgment Writing 2022

    This seminar is designed to assist judges in improving their judgment-writing skills. The program includes lectures, discussions, and workshops that stress the nature of good prose, point-first writing and the special requirements and special challenges of judicial writing. Since the art of writing is a skill that, like all skills, can be improved only through practice, much of the instruction will centre on written exercises and judgments.

    Civil Law Seminar 2022

    This intensive program was intended for judges who hear civil matters and explored tort law, as well as public and private law remedies as pandemic events unfolded. Participants explored ways the legal system and the judicial system adjusted to the pandemic to provide remedies for novel wrongs and claims, and the extent to which traditional theories of liability were adapted to social change and technical developments.

  • January 17 2022 - January 21 2022

    Judging in Your First Five Years: Criminal Law (Federally Appointed Judges) 2022

    This intensive six-day program for recently appointed judges was designed to build their competence in managing criminal trials, from judicial pre-trials to sentencing. As sexual assault trials pose some of the greatest challenges for the judicial role, the seminar used a sexual assault fact scenario to anchor the issues and allowed participants to practice the relevant skills with social context training integrated throughout.
