Council members note with sadness the passing of their colleague Edmond Blanchard

Ottawa, 27 June 2014 – The members of the Canadian Judicial Council are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of their members, the Honourable Edmond P. Blanchard, who was Chief Justice of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada and a member of the Federal Court. 

Chief Justice Blanchard was a respected member of the Canadian Judicial Council for nearly ten years. Chief Justice McLachlin, Chairperson of the Council, praised Chief Justice Blanchard for his unfailing dedication to justice and the Council: "Edmond served his country with great distinction and was held in high esteem by his colleagues on the Council, who will remember him for his humility, wisdom, and the respect he showed to all. I am honoured to have worked with him. I wish to express my deepest condolences to his family."

As a senior member of the Federal Court, Chief Justice Blanchard typically worked on the most difficult, and often high profile, matters. He was patient, thoughtful, and always respectful of everyone. His expertise in administrative law and national security cases was a tremendous asset to the Court. Chief Justice Crampton stated: "He was a wonderful human being whose contribution was truly exceptional. He was a dear friend and close confidant to many on the Court. I will deeply miss his wise counsel and humanity." 

His work in the area of judicial education was instrumental in fostering Council's goal of ensuring all members of the judiciary have the knowledge and skills needed for performing their duties. He also was a vice-chair of the Judicial Conduct Committee of Council, working diligently over the years to review allegations of misconduct in a way that fosters public confidence in the judiciary. His invaluable contribution in this area will remain a source of pride to all his colleagues.

All Council members express their sincere condolences to Edmond's family. He will be greatly missed.
