Canadian Judicial Council notes with sadness the passing of the Honourable J.J. Michel Robert
Ottawa, December 3, 2025 – Members of the Canadian Judicial Council were saddened to hear of the passing of their former colleague, the Honourable J.J. Michel Robert, who was a valued member of the Council during his tenure as Chief Justice of Quebec from 2002-2011.
During his time on the Council, the Honourable J.J. Michel Robert was active on several committees including the Executive Committee, the Judicial Salaries and Benefits Committee, the Appeal Courts Forum, and the former Administration of Justice Committee. He also served as Vice-Chair of the Council from 2009 to 2011.
Following his retirement from the court in 2011, he continued his five-decade legal career as counsel in the firm BCF and as an associate professor at the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Law.
“Former Chief Justice Robert is remembered as an eminent jurist who had a remarkable career, both as a lawyer and a judge, participating in a number of matters that had a significant impact on Canadian society, including the 1980 constitutional negotiations that led to the patriation of the Constitution. He has left an enduring legacy and the Council will remain forever grateful for his contributions – both at the Council table and beyond,” noted Chief Justice of Canada and Council Chairperson, the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, P.C.
On behalf of all its members, the Council extends its sympathy to the family and friends of former Chief Justice Robert.
